Overview
The city of Orihuela on the Costa Blanca is situated at the base of the mountains of the same name, slightly inland from the coast. With a population of around 80,000 the city was originally settled by the Romans and is easily accessible from the major airports in the region. The motorway between Alicante and Murcia (where two of the major airports are situated) provides a quick and easy link, and local transport including the extensive bus network and the train line all ensure this city is well connected and easy to reach for a day trip.
The city is located within a reasonable distance to a number of the trade mark beaches on the coast and the pleasant year round climate ensures this city is a possible tourist destination at all times.
Local area
Nourished by the Segura River, the surrounding areas boast wonderful vegetation including a vibrant countryside with orange trees and olives. With trade mark palm trees, common to other towns in the region, the city provides a pleasant respite from the hot midday sun. With Arabic architecture and design, reflecting the areas past Moorish influence, the city has a pleasant atmosphere with many sites and monuments of interest dating from the time of the Emirate of Cordoba, but also from the Carthaginian and
Visigoth periods.
The elevated surroundings, thanks to the hilly landscape, provide wonderful views and an excellent place to watch the sunset. The area is proud of its connection to local wildlife and maintenance of the local ecosystem, and provides a welcome change from the large built up areas such as Benidorm.
Beaches and sights
Local beaches are all of good quality and may be less crowded than the large more popular resorts and tourists are well catered for – holiday accommodation is reasonable and available, and there are many activities such as sailing and other sports on offer in the area.
The magnificent cathedral, built during the 14th and 15th Centuries is a great starting point for sightseeing. Originally a mosque, the cathedral is an impressive site. There is also a Baroque church and an old Arab style castle. There are some wonderful
location espagne piscine palaces (some of which have been converted into holiday accommodation) including the Palace of Count de la Luna, and old homes with beautiful facades and balconies. With plenty of museums reflecting the local history, this city is an historian’s paradise. The birth place of the famous poet and activist Miguel Hernandez can be found on Arriba Street and holds some interesting artefacts from his life.
